Shopify cookie banner too big on mobile: what it costs and how to fix it
Most Shopify traffic is on phones. For those shoppers the cookie banner is not a footer detail, it is the landing page. A banner that takes the whole screen turns every ad click into a consent form before anyone sees a product.
Why banners end up full-screen
Consent apps are designed on desktop, where a banner along the bottom edge looks modest. The same banner on a 375-pixel-wide phone has to stack its title, its paragraph, its policy link and three buttons vertically. Add a preferences panel and the categories list, and the banner is taller than the viewport. Some apps make it worse by design, with a dimmed overlay that blocks scrolling until the shopper responds.
“Way too big on mobile” is a recurring one-star review on the largest consent apps for this reason. The merchant did not choose it; the app had no compact mode.
What it costs
A shopper who arrived from an ad has a few seconds of intent. A wall between them and the product spends that intent on a decision they do not care about. The result is a bounce, or a reflexive tap on the biggest button, which is why many merchants see “accept all” rates that are suspiciously high and add-to-cart rates that are suspiciously low on mobile.
Regulators have also been clear that consent obtained by obstruction is not freely given. A banner that makes the site unusable until the shopper accepts is both a conversion problem and a compliance one.
What a compliant mobile banner looks like
A bottom sheet, not a wall. Anchored to the bottom edge, capped at a fraction of the screen height, with the page still visible and scrollable above it.
Three taps, equal weight. Accept, reject and preferences visible without scrolling. Reject must be as easy as accept; hiding it behind a second screen is the pattern regulators keep fining.
A reopen control. A small, persistent way to change the choice later, so the banner never has to be aggressive the first time.
No overlay. Dimming or freezing the page is what makes a banner feel like a wall, whatever its size.
Fixing it on your store
First check what your current app offers. Some have a compact or “bar” layout buried in the settings. If the only mobile option is the full-screen one, the fix is a different banner.
FairConsent renders a compact bottom sheet on phones by default, with a capped height, the page visible behind it, accept and reject side by side, and a small floating button to reopen preferences. It is a theme app embed, so enabling it takes one switch in the theme editor and uninstalling leaves nothing behind.
